Oliveira,A.M; Silva,P.S.L; Albuquerque,C.C; Azevedo,C.M.S.B; Cardoso,M.J; Oliveira,O.F.
There has been interest in reducing the use of herbicides for weed control in order to decrease environmental degradation problems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of gliricidia planting density sown by broadcasting and intercopping on green ear and corn grain yield as well as on weed control. A randomized block design with split-plots and five replicates were adopted. Cultivars AG 1051, BM 2022, and BM 3061, assigned to plots, were submitted to the following treatments: no hoeing, two hoeings (at 20 and 40 days after sowing), and intercropped with gliricidia sown at densities of 10 and 20 seeds m-2. Thirty weed species occurred in the experiment area, with Cucumis anguria as the most frequent ones. Cultivar BM 2022 was the best for...

Weed control via intercropping with gliricidia: II. corn crop Planta Daninha
Silva,P.S.L.; Cunha,T.M.S.; Oliveira,R.C.; Silva,K.M.B.; Oliveira,O.F..
A reduction in herbicide use is one of modern agriculture's main interests and several alternatives are being investigated with this objective, including intercropping. Gliricídia (Gliricidia sepium) mulch has no allelopathic effect on corn or beans but significantly decreased the population of some weed species. The objective of this study was to evaluate green ear and grain yield in corn cultivars as a response to weed control achieved via intercropping with gliricidia. A completely randomized block design with five replicates and split-plots was used. Cultivars AG 1051, AG 2060, BRS 2020, and PL 6880 (assigned to plots) were submitted to the following treatments: no hoeing, hoeing (performed at 20 and 40 days after sowing the corn), and corn...

Weed Diversity in Corn with Different Plant Arrangement Patterns Grown Alone and Intercropped with Palisade Grass Planta Daninha
MELO,T.S.; MAKINO,P.A.; CECCON,G..
ABSTRACT: Composition and level of weed infestation interfere with crop yield and increase production costs. This study aimed to identify weed composition and infestation in corn grown with different plant populations, single, and intercropped with palisade grass. The phytosociological method was used to evaluate density, frequency, dominance, and infestation level of weeds in single and intercropped corn, a with conventional (0.90 m) and reduced (0.45 m) spacing, and low and high plant population in Dourados, MS, Brazil. Commelina benghalensis, Echinochloaspp., and Euphorbia heterophylla were the species most found in the treatments. Single corn with higher plant population decreased weed occurrence. Treatments with palisade grass under a reduced spacing...

Abstract: The objective of this work was to compare the yield and nutritive value of the silage of corn intercropped with palisade grass (Urochloa brizantha 'Marandu') or guinea grass (Megathyrsus maximus 'Tanzânia') with those of the silage of monocropped corn, as well as to evaluate the pasture established in the intercropping systems during two growing seasons (2010-2011 and 2011-2012), in low-altitude Brazilian Cerrado. The treatments consisted of three cropping systems: monocropped corn, corn intercropped with palisade grass, and corn intercropped with guinea grass, with four replicates. Intercropping decreased corn forage dry matter yield for silage; however, due to the addition of grass, total dry matter yield (corn + grass) was similar between...

Yield components and reproductive, physiological, and root traits used in early selection for nitrogen use efficiency in corn PAB
Morais,Pedro Patric Pinho; Sousa,Massaine Bandeira e; Galli,Giovanni; Andrade,Luciano Rogério Braatz e; Fritsche-Neto,Roberto; Oliveira,Aluízio Borém de.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to examine the possibility of using yield components and reproductive, physiological, and root traits in early selection for nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in corn. Sixty-four inbred lines were evaluated under two nitrogen fertilization levels: ideal and low. The evaluations were performed at three phenological stages: eight fully-expanded leaves, tasseling stage, and physiological maturity. It is possible to select superior lines for NUE, but the yield components did not show differential behavior under the different nitrogen levels evaluated. Root, reproductive, and physiological traits are not promising for early selection of corn lines with high NUE. Likewise, the eight-leaves and tasseling stages were not...

Yield Losses and Economic Threshold of GR® F2 Volunteer Corn in Bean Planta Daninha
PIASECKI,C.; RIZZARDI,M.A..
ABSTRACT: Volunteer corn has high competitive capacity with bean, and the degree of interference varies as a function of corn density and origin (individual plant or clump). This study aimed to quantify bean yield losses under interference with densities of individual plants and clumps (seven plants at the same point) of GR® F2 volunteer corn and calculate the economic threshold (ET). Two experiments were carried out in a randomized blocks design with three replicates in Passo Fundo, RS, Brazil. The studied volunteer corn densities were 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, and 12 individual plants and clumps m-2. The bean yield was assessed and calculated the yield losses (%) in response to volunteer corn interference. The yield loss data were fitted to the rectangular...

YIELD RESPONSE FACTOR (KY) FOR WINTER CORN CROP IN THE REGION OF DOURADOS, MS, BRAZIL REA
Silva,Jaqueline A. da; Rezende,Maiara K. A.; Flumignan,Danilton L..
ABSTRACT Plant yield is strongly influenced by the amount of water used by it. In this sense, yield response factor (Ky) allows evaluating the decrease in yield as a function of the evapotranspiration that occurs, which may be an important tool for harvest forecasting. Therefore, this study aimed to determine Ky for winter corn crop grown in the region of Dourados, MS, Brazil. The yield function analysis based on the water factor, which requires actual (Ya) and maximum (Ym) yield data, as well as actual (ETa) and maximum (ETm) evapotranspiration, was used to adjust Ky. Ym was assumed to be 8,820 kg ha−1, while Ya was obtained for each season from the database SIDRA from IBGE. ETm and ETa were estimated by sequential daily water balance, considering four...

(Zea mays L.) Thai Agricultural
Niran Juntawong; Prasart Kuermanee.
Drought stress could induce expressions of various genes that are involved in stress tolerance and responses. Recent studies were emphasized on a gene encoded for the 9-cis epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase (NCED) enzyme which catalyzes the biosynthesis of abscisic acid (ABA) in plants. However, little is known about drought tolerance genes in maize. We designed primers from the VP14 sequence in the NCBI gene bank for the study of expression of drought tolerance gene in SW 2301 drought tolerant and KSX 4605 drought sensitive lines. The RT-PCR showed an expression of drought responsible gene in SW 2301 drought tolerant line. Under drought condition, the expression of the responsible gene was higher in stem apical meristem than in root and leaf tissues. The cDNA...
